I remember when I found out that I was having another boy. I am embarrassed to say that I cried a bucket of tears because I desperately wanted a girl. I am so thankful that God gives us the best gifts and that He is the creator of life instead of me.
“Maya” also desperately wanted a girl. She and her husband had a beautiful 2-year-old son that they adored and felt a girl would perfectly round out their family. So determined to have a girl, she studied and practiced a methodology to improve her chances of conceiving a female. After taking a positive home pregnancy test, she was anxious to know if she was having a girl. If she had conceived a second boy, she was determined to have an abortion. We met her because she was looking for an abortion clinic to do an ultrasound.
Through a search on her phone, Maya found CHOICES. Each of us has a backstory. Her husband had recently confessed to infidelity. She was also grieving the loss of her grandmother and a dear friend. Her suffering shook her to the core, and she was fearful, confused, and discouraged about her future. The advocate here at CHOICES asked Maya to consider how much she loved her toddler son and then delicately made a connection that no circumstances could diminish the value of his life, or any life.
Maya took a deep breath that day, made an appointment to return for an ultrasound, and began contemplating her future. Would she be able to abort her child: boy or girl? Would her marriage be restored? Would she ever see her grandma again, who was a strong Christian? Could she trust God even while she is suffering?
Maya returned the following week with her mom, and we were able to talk about her unanswered questions about faith. During the ultrasound, she said, “No matter what, I am having this baby!”
Many of the questions remain unanswered. We don’t know yet if Maya is expecting a boy or a girl. But you have helped her answer the ultimate question: that the creator of LIFE has given her the gift of LIFE! The rest is to be determined. Let’s stay tuned. Just as He led Maya to CHOICES, the giver of LIFE will continue to reveal himself in her story.
